Despite both players being on course to secure their respective league titles with their teams and in the latter stages of the Champions League, Lionel Messi is far more likely to win the individual honour than Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to a report done by FiveThirtyEight, via the Irish Mirror, Lionel Messi is three times more likely to win the highest individual honour in football in 2019 than arch rival Cristiano Ronado.
This despite both players being on course to claiming their respective domestic league titles with their teams and having enjoyed progression into the quarterfinal stages of the Champions League.
The report states that the outcome of the Champions League may end up factoring into calculations but as it stands, after ‘”placing focus on every team’s defensive and offensive capabilities as well as round-by-round probabilities”, Lionel Messi is well ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

Individually speaking, their respective numbers this season seem to back up that notion as well.
Ronaldo has notched up 25 goals and 12 assists in 37 apppearances so far this season but Lionel Messi has scored 43 goals and set up another 21 in just 41 appearances.
Messi was involved in Barcelona’s 1-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Manchester United, with a delightful dinked pass to Luis Suarez in the far post that led to the goal. Ronaldo, on the other hand, scored Juventus’ goal away to Ajax to take a 1-1 draw back to Turin.
